NKOSILATHI M MDLONGWA says: The word Mdlongwa is a northern Ndebele surname from Zimbabwe. It is a Nguni corruption of the Sotho word/surname Motlokwa/Motlokoa/Motlhokwa. Those who bare this surname are Batlokwa tribespeople who where forcibly assimilated into the Zulu sub-group, the Ndebele, led by one of Shaka's generals, Mzilikazi, during the mfecane disturbances. They were captured somewhere around the Magaliesburg mountains in South Africa in the late 1810s and driven northwards as war slaves. They later adopted a Nguni identity and way of life as the years passed. More were later captured in places around present day Botswana during raids for cattle and women. Their Nguni captors misprounced the word Motlokwa, which means one of the Batlokwa tribe, fitting it into their own parlance the end result being the word Mdlongwa. The word itself is Nguni sounding but it has no known meaning in any Nguni language and it is unique to the northern Ndebele of Zimbabwe, though it has a presence in South Africa and Botswana, where the majority of the Batlokwa live, due to colonial and post-colonial migrations.
