Meaning of this name is unknown.
Allen Hookway says: Our family history records that the Hookway "group" were Huguenot French who escaped to England in the 17th century. (1680's)as refugees from Europe. They settled specifically in Devon in a place which they namd "Hookwey" which was a bend along a river. For political reasons they altered their French names to Hookway and as time progressed the area became known as Hookway. It is only a small village and is located just out of Bideford in Devon. As Bideford was a ship building and industrial area it soon became the town to which most Hookway families moved to and settled. All Hookways can be traced back to Bideford and the village of Hookway in Devon England if you trace back far enough.

Ben Martin says: habitational name from Hookway in Crediton (Devon) which derives its name from Old English hōc ‘hook; bend in a river or hook-shaped hill spur’ + weg ‘way path road’.

Ben Martin says: The above description of the origin of the Hookway family name doesn’t sound right. First of all, Hookway is a small hamlet about 2 km SE of Crediton in mid-Devon (i.e. it is not near Bideford, although many Hookways subsequently moved to the Bideford area). Secondly, there are Hookways recorded in the Crediton area in the late 1500s and early 1600s – i.e. some time before the Huguenot emigres arrived in Britain in the 1680s. Thirdly, the origin of the name is apparently Old English: hōc ‘hook; bend in a river or hook-shaped hill spur’ + weg ‘way path road’.
