Anonymous says: The surname Glinka is spread over Central and Eastern Europe. Its basic Polish-language meaning is clay. In Ukraine, it is often meet in the form Hlinka. The main root of Glinka family is located in the Makow County and its capital Makow Mazowiecki, a town in central Poland. The representative of Glinkas who started the Russian like of the family was Wladyslaw Wiktoryn Glinka of the Trzaska Coat of Arms. He was a Polish nobleman who lived in the Makow County and, for his extraordinary bravery in the wars of Rzeczpospolita, as an award received from the King of Poland Wladyslaw IV Waza the landed estate near Smolensk city, which at this time belonged to Poland and today is located in Russia. After the Russo-Polish War (1654–1667), also known as the Thirteen Years' War, the First Northern War, and the War for Ukraine, which was a military conflict between the Tsardom of Russia and the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth initiated through the Bohdan Khmelnytsky Rebellion of Zaporozhian Cossacks, Rzeczpospolita lost the Smolensk region as the result of the Treaty of Andrusovo. Then, W.W. Glinka took the Russian Orthodox Church baptism, became a Russian citizen, and the Tsar Alexis of Russia preserved his all Polish noble privileges. W.W. Glinka was a great-great grandfather of Mikhail Ivanovich Glinka, the famous Russian composer who created the Russian National Opera and was the teacher of other Russian composers such like Pyotr Ilich Tschaikovsky. The region near Smolensk city, where W.W. Glinka held the landed estate, is named after him Glinkovskii Raion Smolenskoy Oblasti (The Glinka Region of Smolensk Oblast). Other prominent Russian representatives of the Glinka family, such like a soil scientist Konstantin Dmitrevich Glinka and a chemist Nikolai Leonidovich Glinka had roots in the Smolensk line of Glinkas. In Poland, Glinkas from Makow County, and generally from the former Lomza Governorate, contributed to the early foundations of modern Poland. For example Mikolaj Glinka actively participated in creation of the Constitution of May 3, 1791, which was the first European and the second worldly constitution. Prtesently, the writer Lukasz Andrzej Glinka is the major representative of the Makow County line of Glinkas.
