Fatty says: A variant of the surname Fathi is Fatty, sometimes Fati or Faty, mostly found among the Manding in Gambia, Senegal, Guinea Bissau, Mauritania, Guinea and Sierra Leone. Bearers of the surname are associated with the Hydara lineage of Afro-Arabic scholars from North Africa, mainly Morocco, Algeria and Egypt. Their ancestors were believed to have crossed the Sahara to teach Islam among indigenous West African populations. Through intermarriage, their offspring became cultural hybrids and religious agents for other North African clerics who were to continue with the project of spreading the religion in West Africa. This way, their original surname took the corrupted Manding form Fatty/Fati. It is noteworthy that Manding languages, like most languages in the Niger-Congo family, do not have the 'th' sound, hence the corruption of the original form of the surname. But in Manding culture, the etymology and cultural source of surnames are usually preserved, with doubles echoing or serving as a referent to the original. Sometimes, the two are even interchangeable. It is therefore common to hear a Fatty being called Fatty-Hydara or Hydara, especially in purely cultural or ceremonial settings. Aside from sources based on the history, culture and socio-linguistic heritage of the Fatty-Hydaras, the theory is also supported by the fact that almost all original and typical Manding surnames and their doubles or referents are traced back to the epics and chronicles of ancient Mali - from the pre-Sundiatta era, through 500 years of Manding civilization. These chronicles are common oral narratives preserved and relayed by traditional historian families of the Manding. However, in no such account is there reference to the Fatty or Hydara surnames or their accepted variants among the Manding.
