James Steakley says: Here is a quote from "The Steakley Family:Genealogy and History" by Eugene Prentice Steakley (Los Angeles: self-published, 1st edition 1941, 2nd edition 1961), page 1: "The name 'Steakley', in its old English form, was a combination of two words: the Danish word 'steg' which later became 'steak' in English but was pronounced 'steek' and in its Danish origin meant 'cattle'. The English word 'ley' which meant, then, 'meadow', was added, the combination of the two words in its pure old English form denoting 'cattle by the meadow'. An old English lexicon explains that the forming of the name involved the settling of the Danes in northern England around the seventh century. These Danes made frequent raids on the cattle to the south of them, and the English at some time during this period applied the descriptive word, 'steakley', to them which evidently had taken on the meaning of 'cattle raiders'! This was certainly not a family name of the Danes, but it was adopted, or applied, to our people, who were English, some time in the dim past. Many of the Steakleys of this era now pronounce our name with a long 'a', or as 'Stakeley'. We believe this is proper, since it is more easily understood by strangers. Furthermore, the word 'steak', which is derived from the Danish word, 'cattle', is now pronounced with a long 'a' or as 'stake'. However, a number of our people still adhere to the old pronunciation."
